#16 The Energetic Power of Words
Remember how you felt when a stranger made a negative comment about your dog's public behavior? And remember how hard it was to let go of that painful feeling? Telling yourself it was just some random stranger who knows nothing about you isn't enough to banish the emotional hurt.
That negative feeling persists and intrudes into your thoughts for days. Why? Why does a stranger's criticism have so much power over your thoughts and feelings? And what does it mean about the way you communicate with your sensitive dog?
A client once shared her concern that her usually happy dog was suddenly depressed that day, and she didn't understand why.
She mentioned that earlier that day, she had scolded her dog for a minor offense, but the dog surely would have forgotten it by now.
The important lesson in this example is that the negative energy of the words she used to scold her dog had overwhelmed the dog's usual happy mood.
To tip the scales toward a positive mood, the dog needed to be flooded with positive words from the people around her. The negative burden was too heavy for her to overcome alone, and one or two kind words wouldn't carry enough weight.
To authentically impact a dog's inner emotional state, positive words must have a high energetic frequency. What does that mean?
When the positive words you speak, think, or write are aligned with your beliefs and your intention is for the highest possible good, then positive words have a high energetic frequency. Repeating high-frequency positive words impacts the positivity of others. Empathy occurs when two individuals have the same energetic frequency and amplify each other.
Alternatively, an environment filled with negative energy negatively impacts animals and humans exposed to it.
The words you use to address your dog have a huge effect on their inner emotional state, self-confidence, and mood:
- Do you address your dog with negative words like: no, stop it, bad, naughty, or leave it?
- Do you ignore your dog and seldom acknowledge their presence?
- Do you mentally label your dog as stubborn, stupid, unfriendly, bad, or hopeless?
In contrast, do you address your dog with positive words?
- Do you tell them they're good, happy, cute, funny, the best, clever, or beautiful?
- Do you say, I love you and believe it?
- Do you speak to your dog frequently in a conversational tone?
- Do you acknowledge your dog's feelings and tell them, I understand?
- Do you recognize the best in your dog without focusing on their faults?
Science has proven the power of energy in the material world. The words you think, speak, or write have an energy frequency that affects your dog's well-being and emotional state. When you comfort a frightened dog with positive words, you can instill a felt sense of safety. When you speak positive words in a relaxed voice, your dog will begin to relax, too.
Science also shows how positive or negative energy affects the physical body on a cellular level. My experiences as a Healing Touch for Animals Practitioner have shown me the profound, transformative effects of positive energy on the behavior, emotions, and well-being of animals.
Here's an incredible experiment reported by the Heart Math Institute.
The purpose of the experiment was to help children understand the energetic power of words.
The classroom experiment was performed across several grades and ages.
"In each classroom, students prepared two jars of cooked rice. One was labeled “Positive Words” and the other “Negative Words.” Each day, the class spoke to the jars, offering words such as “Thank you,” “You rock,” and “I love you” to one, while directing hurtful words toward the other."
Results:
At the end of the experiment, the jar of rice labeled Positive Words "stayed fresh, smelled good, and was as fresh as when we started."
The jar of rice labeled Negative Words "changed quickly! It grew mold, smelled bad, and turned colors!"
The experiment "opened the door to an important conversation: words have energy. The words we speak can carry kindness, encouragement, and love – or anger, frustration, and hurt.
And even when we can't see that energy, we can often feel its impact."
Do One Different Thing
One small shift can change everything.
- Adopt the practice of using high-frequency positive words, especially when you speak to your dog.
- Be more attuned to how your words make you feel.
- Be aware of the effect of positive and negative energy in the environment on your dog's energy.
